DOUG E. FRESHとMC RICKY D(SLICK RICK)”LA-DI-DA-DI”に続いて、原曲のラップ起点で声ネタを掘り下げていきます。
とは言え、前回ほど声ネタ鬼盛りという感じではなく、今回は割と超有名フレーズ一発勝負的な感じ。
御存知、MARLEY MARL率いるクイーンズをレペゼンするJUICE CREWと、KRS-ONE率いるブロンクスをレペゼンするB.D.P.(BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS)によるブリッジバトルの発端となった歴史的クラシック、MC SHAN”THE BRIDGE”。
ぶっちゃけ、リリック内に「ヒップホップがクイーンズで生まれた」と断言しているラインは無いように思うけど、文脈で拡大解釈して半ば強引にKRS-ONEが”SOUTH BRONX”で名指しディスしたことでビーフに発展した、と。
その後、MC SHAN”KILL THE NOISE”～B.D.P.”THE BRIDGE IS OVER”の2ラリー目をもって、ビーフの本筋は長期化することなく終結しましたが、便乗するコバンザメが多数居たこともあり、ビーフそのものが独り歩きして、より大きな祭りになったように思います。
早速脱線しましたが、”THE BRIDGE”をWHO SAMPLEDでサクッと検索してみると、本作からの引用は(発覚しているものだけでも)現時点で200曲ほどあり、さすがにDOUG E. FRESH & MC RICKY D”LA-DI-DA-DI”の1000曲超えには遠く及ばないものの、なかなかの数字。
古くは80年代から最近の2020年代まで、ヒップホップはもちろん、R&B、レゲエ(ラガ・ヒップホップ)、国内の日本語ラップまで、原曲を声ネタとしてスクラッチで差し込んだものに加え、明らかにそれと分かるレベルの引用を紹介します。

12″の方は、AB面違いやラベルの色違いでいくつかのバリエーションが存在するんで、どの形がオリジナル盤かは断定しにくいところもあるんですが、見分け方で信憑性の高いのが以下の3箇所。
- “THE BRIDGE”がB面に収録されている(A面メインに収録された盤は2NDプレス)
- ラベル下部の電話番号が「215-878-2266」(再発は「212-878-2266」)
- ラベル下部の電話番号の「78」の間に薄い縦棒が入っていて「215-87|8-2266」と記載
正規盤以前に出回ったであろうプロモ盤の収録内容で見ても、元々”THE BRIDGE”がB面曲だったのは明らかなんですが、恐らく2NDプレスの方もMARLEY MARLが目ざとくブリッジバトル開戦直後に刷ったものと考えられるんで、再発と呼ぶほどオリジナル盤とのタイムラグは無いように思います。
ただ、こだわる方は是非覚えておいてもらえれば！

“THE BRIDGE”はラップの引用数もさることながら、AUDIO TWO”TOP BILLIN'”辺りと並ぶ打ち込みクラシックとしても有名なんで、声ネタのみならず、ビートそのものやSE的に使用されることも多いのが特徴。
日本語ラップで言えば、独自解釈でのリメイク的なILLMARIACHI”NAGOYA QUEENS”での使用が有名なんですが、改めて聴き返してみると意外と声ネタは使ってなかったりして、色んなパターンの使用例が存在するのも面白い感じ。
とは言え、ダントツで目立つのはやっぱり開始1分頃の「HIPHOP(WAS SET IN THE DARK)」のフレーズで、”HIPHOP”とか”HIPHOP ●●●●”みたいな直球のタイトルが付いた楽曲での使用が多く、そういう意味ではいかにもヒップホップ的声ネタの最高峰と断言していいと思います。
また、ブリッジバトルを踏まえて、SE的にB.D.P.”THE BRIDGE IS OVER”とセットで使用されるケースがあったりするのも面白いと思います。
JUICE CREWメンバーとして広く知られるMC SHANも、代表曲を一つだけ挙げろと言われれば恐らくは100人中100人が”THE BRIDGE”だろうというダントツの知名度を誇る一曲故、セルフリサイクル多めなのは”LA-DI-DA-DI”のSLICK RICKよろしく、KAMAKAZE(KAMAKAZEE)”BRIDGE 95″、TRAGEDY KHADAFY & IMAN THUG”THE BRIDGE 2000″(MARLEY MARL名義)、QB FINEST”DA BRIDGE 2001″等、地元クイーンズの後輩からも愛を持ってリメイクされてきました。
ちなみに、オリジナル盤は元々がB面曲だったこともあり、1STプレス/2NDプレス共にオリジナル・バージョンの収録のみ、声ネタをクリアに抜いてくるのは不可能でしたが、2000年のMARLEY MARL名義での再発(PIRATE盤)で解禁されて以降、ついにアカペラ利用が可能になりました！
